Three-card tarot spread

The simplest and quickest tarot spread. Three cards show what led to the situation, what is happening now and where everything is heading. It works for any question and for anyone just getting to know tarot.

Three-card spread layout

  1. Past — What led to the situation, its roots and the experience you draw on.
  2. Present — What is happening now and which energy dominates the situation.
  3. Future — Where everything is heading if nothing changes.

How to interpret the spread

The Three-card spread is read from left to right, like a short story. First look at each card on its own, then at the connection between them: if a difficult card sits in the past and a bright one in the future, the situation is improving; if it’s the other way around, it’s worth thinking about what to change now.

Remember that the “Future” position isn’t a verdict, but the most likely outcome if things continue as they are. The present card hints at what you can influence.

The spread also has other position variants: “situation — obstacle — advice”, “you — partner — relationship”, “thoughts — feelings — actions”. For these, try our dedicated Situation spread and Relationship spread.

Frequently asked questions

How many times can I do a three-card tarot spread?

Once per question. If the situation has changed, you can repeat it a few days later. Repeating it over and over in a row only confuses things and doesn’t give a new answer.

What question should I ask for a three-card spread?

Any open-ended question works: “What is happening in my relationship?”, “How will the situation at work develop?”. For questions that need a short answer, a Yes or No Tarot reading is a better fit.

Is this tarot reading free?

Yes, all spreads on the site are free, with no sign-up. Your question stays in your browser and isn’t sent anywhere.

Are reversed cards included?

Yes, by default a card can come up reversed — this makes the spread more accurate. If you’re used to reading with upright cards only, uncheck “Include reversed cards” before you lay out the spread.
