How to calculate your arcanum by date of birth
The calculation is based on tarot numerology: each number from 1 to 22 corresponds to one of the 22 Major Arcana. If the number comes out greater than 22, subtract 22 from it.
- Personality arcanum is your day of birth. If you were born between the 1st and the 22nd, your arcanum equals the day; if between the 23rd and the 31st, subtract 22. This arcanum describes your character, the way you carry yourself and how other people see you.
- Destiny arcanum is the sum of all the digits of your date of birth. It shows your main life task and what you grow into over the years.
- Year arcanum is your day of birth + the number of your birth month + the sum of the digits of the forecast year. It points to the main theme of the year.
- Couple arcanum is the sum of two people’s destiny arcana. It describes what holds the relationship together and what the couple should work on.
Example. Date of birth: 07/15/1990. Personality arcanum: 15 (The Devil). Sum of the digits: 1+5+0+7+1+9+9+0 = 32, 32 − 22 = 10, so the destiny arcanum is Wheel of Fortune. Year arcanum for 2027: 15 + 7 + (2+0+2+7) = 33, 33 − 22 = 11, which is Strength.

Destiny matrix
The personality arcanum is the first point of the destiny matrix. You can calculate the full matrix, with talents, money, relationships, the karmic tail and purpose, in the destiny matrix calculator. Another popular method is Mary K. Greer’s tarot birth cards: personality card, soul card and hidden teacher.
Why 8 is Justice and 11 is Strength
Tarot numerology and the “destiny matrix” system, which is popular in Russia, use the older Marseille numbering: Arcanum VIII is Justice and XI is Strength. In the Rider–Waite deck, which the card meanings on our site are based on, these two cards swap places. That is why in the calculator 8 is Justice, 11 is Strength and 22 is The Fool (in the deck it is numbered zero).
Other methods exist too: when some authors get a number greater than 22, instead of subtracting 22 they add its digits together. The results can differ; we use the most common method, subtracting 22.
What to do with your result
Your arcanum by date of birth is not a verdict but a hint. Read through the strengths and weaknesses of your personality arcanum and ask yourself which of them are really true of you. The destiny arcanum shows the direction of your growth, and the year arcanum shows the theme worth paying attention to over the next twelve months.
You’ll find more about each card in the “Major Arcana” section. And to see how the arcana play out in a specific situation, try an online tarot reading.
The 2027 year card
The digits of 2027 add up to 11, which is the Strength arcanum. What it promises for love, work and money, and how to calculate your personal year card, is covered on the “Tarot Year Card 2027” page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find my tarot arcana by date of birth?
Your personality arcanum equals your day of birth (if the day is greater than 22, subtract 22). Your destiny arcanum is the sum of all the digits of your date of birth, reduced by 22 if needed. The easiest way is to use the calculator on this page.
Which arcanum is the most powerful?
There are no strong or weak arcana: each has its own strengths and lessons. The Sun and The World are considered the most favorable, The Tower and The Devil the most difficult, but even they bring great strength and the capacity for change.
What’s the difference between the personality arcanum and the destiny arcanum?
The personality arcanum describes your character and how you show up in the world from birth. The destiny arcanum describes your main task and the direction of growth that unfolds with age.
How do I calculate compatibility by arcana?
Add the two people’s destiny arcana together. If the sum is greater than 22, subtract 22. The resulting arcanum describes what the relationship is built on. The calculator works it out automatically if you enter your partner’s date of birth.
Is the arcanum by date of birth related to the destiny matrix?
Yes. The destiny matrix is built on the same principle, from the numbers of the date of birth reduced to the 22 arcana. The personality arcanum corresponds to the first point of the matrix. The full matrix includes more positions and needs a separate interpretation.
Is my date of birth sent anywhere?
No. The calculation happens right in your browser; your date is not sent or stored anywhere.
