Major Arcana tarot cards
The Major Arcana are the heart of the tarot deck. These 22 cards describe not individual events but life’s big turning points: setting out, choice, crisis, liberation, the end of a cycle. When a Major Arcana card appears in a spread, the situation touches something deeper than it seems at first glance.

The Fool’s journey: how the Major Arcana connect
The Major Arcana are traditionally read as a story. The Fool is the unnumbered hero who sets out on the road. Along the way he meets teachers and forces: the will of The Magician, the intuition of The High Priestess, the care of The Empress and the order of The Emperor.
The second part of the journey is trials and growing up: the choice of The Lovers, the victory of The Chariot, the solitude of The Hermit, the turn of the Wheel of Fortune, the pause of The Hanged Man and the end of a stage in the Death card.
The third part is meeting the shadow and renewal: The Devil reveals dependencies, The Tower destroys what is false, and after that come the hope of The Star, the anxieties of The Moon, the clarity of The Sun, the awakening of Judgement and the wholeness of The World.
What the Major Arcana mean in a spread
- One Major Arcana card usually points to the main theme of the situation: what it is all really about.
- Several Major Arcana cards say this is an important period and less depends on you than you’d like: events are driving themselves.
- A reversed Major Arcana card shows that the card’s lesson hasn’t been learned yet or that the person is resisting change.
- No Major Arcana at all means the situation is an everyday one and can be resolved with concrete steps, without any fateful turns.
The elements and planets for each card follow the Golden Dawn system; they help you understand the character of the arcanum and connect tarot with astrology.

Frequently asked questions
How many Major Arcana cards are in a tarot deck?
There are 22 Major Arcana. They are numbered from 0 (The Fool) to XXI (The World). Together with the 56 Minor Arcana, they make up the full 78-card deck.
Why is Strength VIII and Justice XI?
In the Rider–Waite deck these cards were swapped to match their astrological correspondences: Strength is linked to Leo, Justice to Libra. In the older Marseille decks the order is reversed. We use the Rider–Waite numbering.
Which Major Arcana card is the most powerful?
The Sun is usually considered the most favorable card and The World the most complete. The Tower and The Devil are seen as the hardest. But there are no “strong” or “weak” cards in tarot: each shows its own stage of the journey.
Can you read with only the Major Arcana?
Yes, many people do, especially at first. A spread with only the Major Arcana gives big-picture answers about destiny, purpose and life’s main lessons, but it describes everyday details less well.
What does a reversed Major Arcana card mean?
Most often, that the card’s energy is delayed or showing up in an immature form. For example, Death reversed speaks of a fear of letting go of the old, and The Star reversed of a loss of faith in yourself.
