What a couple’s karmic tail is

A compatibility matrix is built from two personal matrices, and like a personal one it has a lower part: the karmic tail. It shows the scenario the couple tends to repeat — jealousy, a struggle for control, interfering relatives, each partner living “in their own shell.” It is not a verdict on the relationship but a hint about what the two of you need to work on together.

How to calculate a couple’s tail

  1. For each partner, three base points are calculated: the day of birth, the month, and the sum of the digits of the year (numbers greater than 22 are reduced by adding their digits).
  2. The couple’s points are the sums of the corresponding points of the two partners, reduced in the same way.
  3. From there everything works as in a personal matrix: bottom point = sum of the three, center = sum of all four, root of the tail = center + bottom, middle = root + bottom.

Example: December 25, 1989 (7, 12, 9) and July 15, 1990 (15, 7, 19). The couple’s points: 7 + 15 = 22, 12 + 7 = 19, 9 + 19 = 28 → 10. Bottom point: 22 + 19 + 10 = 51 → 6; center: 51 + 6 = 57 → 12; root: 12 + 6 = 18; middle: 18 + 6 = 24 → 6. The couple’s tail is 18-6-6.

Personal tails and the couple’s tail

The calculator also shows each partner’s personal tail. If the arcana of the couple’s tail match the arcana of a personal tail, the shared lesson amplifies the personal one: whatever a person hasn’t worked through on their own will show up in the relationship too. If there are no matches, the union brings a new theme that neither partner had before.

Almost all couple tails also occur as personal tails — 26 of them. But one, 9-21-12, appears only in a compatibility matrix: in a personal matrix the sum of the points needed for it is too large.

Couple’s tailThe union’s lessonHow common
15-20-5A union against the family’s rules. The couple has to defend their choice in front of relatives: someone in either family may disapprove of the union or try to impose their own rules. Inside the couple, it is easy to be tempted to settle things with money and pressure. What helps: build your own family rules and respectful boundaries with the parents on both sides.10.9%
15-5-8Keeping score of grievances and agreements. The union is tested by honesty: who put in how much, who owes whom, who is right. Arguments about money, property and paperwork are possible, and one partner tends to lecture the other. What helps: transparent agreements about money and giving up “judging” each other.10.5%
18-9-9Together, but each in their own shell. The couple can live side by side and still close off from each other: things left unsaid, anxieties, suspicions. The union is strong when the partners share their thoughts, and heavy when each one silently fills in the blanks. What helps: talk about your fears out loud and regularly spend time together without gadgets.10.3%
12-19-7A couple that is always fighting its way forward. The partners achieve a lot together but live in race mode — career, kids, building a house — and get little joy from the results. One of the two often sacrifices themselves for the common goal. What helps: celebrate shared wins and split the load evenly.10.2%
21-4-10A struggle between control and freedom. One partner tries to control everything, while the other feels caged. The union opens up when the couple broadens their world together — traveling, moving, taking on big projects. What helps: divide areas of responsibility and leave each of you some freedom.10.1%
18-6-6Illusions in love. The partners tend to idealize each other and then become disappointed. Jealousy, suspicion or a third person nearby are possible. The union grows stronger when love is based on the real person, not on an image. What helps: honesty, no secrets, and choosing each other without pressure.8.2%
12-16-4A home that has to be rebuilt. The couple may live through the collapse of shared plans: a move, a lost job, a renovation that wrecks everything. It is important not to turn the crisis into blame and not to sacrifice yourselves for the sake of a “proper” facade. What helps: build on shared values and keep a backup plan.8.0%
6-17-11Strong and talented. Two strong people who inspire each other but may compete and overload the union with work. One of them often ends up in the shadow of the other’s talent. What helps: support both partners’ self-realization and don’t turn the relationship into a project.5.7%
18-3-12Caring through anxiety. The couple cares a great deal — for children, home and parents — but out of fear and self-sacrifice. Worries about money and children and overprotecting each other are possible. What helps: take care of yourselves and of the couple, not just of others.5.1%
9-12-3Lonely together. On the surface everything is there — a home, a settled daily life, financial comfort — yet the partners feel lonely side by side. One of them carries the household alone and feels like a victim. What helps: talk about feelings and share joys, not just chores.4.4%
15-8-11Passion and strength. A vivid, passionate couple with strong personalities. Flashes of jealousy, arguments, a gambling streak with money; it is important not to cross the line and not to pressure each other. What helps: channel the energy into sport, travel and a shared project.4.1%
9-15-6A dependent relationship. A strong attraction that is hard to give up, even when the relationship hurts. There is a risk of codependency and of losing yourself in your partner. What helps: keep a life of your own, with friends and interests outside the couple.2.6%
3-7-22A free-spirited couple. The partners are easy-going, love movement and change, but put off commitments: marriage, children, a shared home. The union is tested by their readiness to put down roots together. What helps: take on shared commitments you can manage, without losing your lightness.1.9%
9-3-21Home versus the world. One partner pulls the couple toward home and domestic life, the other toward the wider world, travel and new projects. A long-distance relationship or a move is possible. What helps: combine coziness with expansion: a home of your own and trips together.1.6%
6-8-20A couple judged by the family line. Relatives actively interfere in the relationship or don’t accept the partners’ choice. The couple repeats their parents’ scenarios. What helps: respect both families, but make decisions as a couple.1.3%
21-7-13Together through change. The couple moves forward in leaps: something ends and a new stage begins. The risk is fighting each other instead of closing the old chapter together. What helps: consciously close each stage and set shared goals.1.2%
3-22-19A party without responsibility. A bright, fun-loving couple that finds it hard to grow up: money goes on pleasures, and the subject of children gets postponed or doesn’t come easily. What helps: keep the joy and learn to plan your future together.1.0%
9-9-18Secrets and intuition. The partners sense each other subtly but tend to be closed off and anxious. It is important not to slide into suspicion and not to hide what matters. What helps: trust and openness, a shared spiritual practice or hobby.0.8%
21-10-7A couple on the road. The partners travel a lot and keep changing cities and plans; the union is held together by movement and a common goal. What helps: have a shared goal and a place you both consider home.0.6%
6-5-17Love versus expectations. The union is tested by other people’s expectations: “the right way to do things,” what parents and society will say. The couple’s creative potential opens up when the partners choose their own path. What helps: live by your own rules and support each other’s talents.0.6%
21-10-16A couple of changes. The union goes through sharp turns: moves, crises, job changes. It falls apart if it rests only on externals, and grows stronger if the partners treat change as a shared adventure. What helps: don’t cling to status and face changes together.0.4%
18-6-15A fateful union. Strong passion and attraction, jealousy and games in the relationship. The partners may hold on to each other through manipulation. What helps: an honest relationship without games, control or checking up on each other.0.3%
6-20-14Balancing family and love. The couple is torn between their own relationship and their obligations to relatives. It is important to find a compromise rather than pick a side. What helps: negotiate and create your own family traditions.0.2%
9-21-12Sacrifice for the sake of freedom. This tail occurs only in a couple’s matrix. One partner may feel like a hostage to the relationship or to circumstances — a move, a job, a duty to family — while the other strives for freedom and new horizons. The union opens up when the couple steps beyond the familiar together and stops sacrificing themselves to other people’s expectations. What helps: broaden your world as a couple and drop the roles of rescuer and victim.0.1%
3-13-10Ups and downs. The couple’s financial well-being comes in waves; sudden changes related to home and children are possible. What helps: a financial cushion and trust in change.less than 0.1%
9-18-9Two hermits. Both partners tend to keep to themselves; the couple may wall itself off from the world and worry about the future. What helps: go out among people together and share your worries.less than 0.1%
6-14-8Justice in love. The couple keeps looking for a balance between giving and receiving and can get stuck keeping score. What helps: agree on things openly and don’t keep a tally of grievances.less than 0.1%

Frequently asked questions

How do I find our couple’s karmic tail?

Enter both dates of birth into the calculator above. It adds up the base points of the two matrices, builds the couple’s matrix and shows its tail with an interpretation.

Is it bad if our couple’s tail matches my personal tail?

No. It means the theme is shared, and the relationship helps you see and work through your personal scenario. But it will also show up more noticeably in the couple.

What is the most common couple’s karmic tail?

The most common is 15-20-5 (10.9% of couples), followed by 15-5-8 and 18-9-9.

Can a couple’s karmic tail be worked through?

Yes. Like a personal tail, a couple’s tail describes a lesson: once the partners notice the repeating scenario and together bring the arcana into their positive expression, it stops undermining the relationship.
